One of the first questions many travelers ask when planning their trip to Costa Rica is, “Should I actually rent a car there?” The answer depends on your travel style, itinerary and sense of adventure. In this blog, we’ll help you decide if a rental car suits your plans, and what all you need to know before getting behind the wheel in ‘Pura Vida’ country.
If you want to explore Costa Rica at your own pace, a rental car is definitely recommended. Many of the most beautiful places, such as national parks, secluded beaches, mountain villages and hidden places in the jungle are difficult to reach by public transport. With a rental car, you are flexible and can plan routes to suit your travel needs. In addition, you can stop wherever you like should you find a coffee shop or restaurant along the way.
If you want to travel by shuttles or public transportation, that is possible. Allow for extra travel time and the shuttles drive mainly between the famous highlights. Is it safe to drive yourself?
In general, driving a car in Costa Rica is safe, especially during the day and in tourist regions. We recommend driving defensively, especially in the mountains or during rainy weather. Keep in mind that traffic rules are sometimes enforced differently than you are used to and signage may be limited.
What are the roads like in Costa Rica?
The main roads between major cities and tourist attractions are mostly paved and passable. However, in rural areas or on routes to natural parks, you may encounter unpaved roads, potholes or steep inclines. During the rainy season (May to November), these roads can be more challenging.

Is a 4×4 necessary in Costa Rica?
For many destinations, a regular car is sufficient, but a 4×4 is highly recommended if you plan to go into the mountains, travel off-the-beaten-path or travel during the rainy season. Popular areas such as Monteverde, Corcovado or the Nicoya Peninsula are more accessible with a 4×4.
Navigation in Costa Rica
Because street names and house numbers are not used, good navigation is essential. Google Maps and Waze work well in Costa Rica. All our hotels and the sights are pre-programmed in these applications which makes finding the right route easier.
A local SIM card or offline maps can also come in handy if you are traveling out of range of mobile internet. We recommend you buy an e-sim so you have the best coverage.

What about parking the rental car in Costa Rica?
In cities and tourist spots, you can often park on the street, but be careful if it is a paid zone. If there is a yellow line painted on the curb, you are not allowed to park here. In some areas there are secure parking lots (parqueo) or your car is guarded by a “parking attendant,” to whom you give a small tip. Do not leave valuables visible in the car.
What if I have a flat tire?
In Costa Rica, you can get your car tire fixed almost anywhere at a “llantera” – that’s a local tire service or repair shop. You’ll find these scattered throughout the country, even in small villages. You can often recognize them by a sign that says “Llantera” or “Servicio de Llantas.” They offer quick help with a flat tire, and many are open 7 days a week. Cost is about US$6 per tire. With a rental car, you carry equipment to change the tire for the spare. Contact the rental company for further instructions.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Costa Rica?
The minimum age to rent a car is usually 21. Drivers between 21 and 25 must pay an additional “young driver fee. A valid driver’s license and credit card in the name of the main driver are required.
Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Costa Rica?
Yes, a credit card in the name of the main driver is required. This is used as a guarantee for the deposit. Without a credit card, you often cannot rent a car. A credit card is also convenient at gas stations and a safe way to pay.
