General Packing Tips for Costa Rica

Clothing:

When you think of the tropics, you might only consider summer clothing. However, the sun is very strong here, so you’ll also appreciate some protective clothing. In certain mountainous areas, it can be quite cool, so you’ll need something warmer. Note: The humidity is generally very high, so it’s best to bring breathable, quick-drying clothing. Leave jeans and heavy, sweaty fabrics at home.

  • Summer Clothing: T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, dresses, skirts
  • Long-Sleeved T-Shirt or Blouse: Great for protecting yourself from the sun and insect bites.
  • Lightweight Long Pants: Think of quick-drying hiking pants that aren’t too tight. Perfect for protection against insect bites.
  • Sweater or Fleece Jacket: Useful for cooler evenings in mountainous areas and San José.
  • Hiking Outfit: Sports leggings, long hiking pants, quick-drying clothes
  • Rain Jacket or Poncho: Essential in the rainy season and sometimes necessary in the dry season too. Preferably bring a breathable rain jacket to avoid discomfort from sweating.
  • Swimwear: Consider a UV swim shirt to protect against the strong sun, especially if you plan to snorkel.
  • Quick-Drying Towel or Sarong: Handy for a refreshing dip in a waterfall, river, or the sea.
  • Hat/Cap
  • Sunglasses

Shoes

A trip to Costa Rica, Panama, or Nicaragua means an active holiday, so good footwear is essential on your packing list. You’ll likely be doing a lot of hiking and getting your feet wet along the way. Therefore, bring footwear that dries quickly. Heavy leather hiking boots are difficult to dry in the high humidity here and can even get moldy. So make sure to pack:

  • Hiking shoes or sneakers: Comfortable, lightweight, and quick-drying hiking shoes or sneakers with good tread for walking in national parks, jungles, mountains, and volcanoes.
  • Sandals: Sturdy hiking sandals that you can wear all day and that can get wet, making them perfect for water activities like rafting or for a dip in a lake, waterfall, or rocky beach.
  • Flip-flops: Great for a relaxing day at the beach or pool, but not for all-day walking.

Travel medication

It’s best to be well-prepared for your trip. While a first aid kit with travel medications should be part of your packing list for Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama, you can also find almost everything at local ‘farmacias’.
