In this adventurous 18-day camping combo trip you will get to know Costa Rica from a unique perspective: From the tent on the roof of your 4×4 car! As a part of this trip you will be camping in Costa Rica with your own off-road vehicle.
You decide what your view and surroundings will be! Do you want to wake up at a tropical beach or do you prefer to park your camping vehicle in the jungle or next to a volcano? It’s all possible! Because all camping gear is included, you don’t have to worry about bringing or buying any of this yourself.
This trip is all about exploring and relaxing. It does not only consist of camping, yet it combines camping with stays in comfortable, small scale hotels and eco lodges in the abundant nature of Costa Rica.
The journey starts with one of Costa Rica’s highlights: a stay in the mountains and cloud forest of Monteverde. Walk the suspension bridges or fly over the cloud forest on a zipline tour! Head North afterwards, where you get to discover clear blue rivers and waterfalls. Here is also where you will start your camping adventure. Drive your 4×4 with rooftop tent and discover the beautiful beaches, tropical dry forests and national parks of the province of Guanacaste.
Near the Arenal volcano, you exchange your rugged 4WD for one without a tent. It’s time to continue the journey in style and explore the area around the volcano and the Caribbean coast in a comfortable way.
Upon arrival in Costa Rica, our driver will pick you up and take you to the first accommodation of this trip. You will stay in a comfortable and authentic hotel in San José.
If you feel like going out to explore, take a stroll through the lively city center. There is plenty to do here during the day and you can find just about anything. We recommend a visit to one of the markets, where you can taste delicious tropical fruits.
At night time, go out to get to know the Barrio Escalante district, where you will encounter the fashionable Costa Ricans and choose from many restaurants.
After meeting one of our travel experts, a comfortable rental car will be dropped off at your hotel. It is time to venture off! Your first stop is Monteverde. This is literally one of Costa Rica’s highlights!
Monteverde is a famous mountain village at an altitude of about 1400 meters. What makes the area so unique is the mystical cloud forest in which Monteverde is surrounded. Explore the forest on a scenic walk across suspension bridges strung between the treetops. Or fly through the forest like a real Superman on a zipline tour!
Also enjoy the delicious coffee, chocolate milk and cheese, which are real specialties from the area!
Only 2 hours away you will enter a completely different landscape. You’ll exchange the cloud forest for the tropical rainforest of Bijagua. Stroll along the Rio Celeste, a beautiful and intense blue river. It is a true must-see!
In the beautiful surroundings of Bijagua you can go horse riding, mountain biking or tubing. This fun activity means you float in an inflatable tire over the most beautiful rivers through the rainforest. It’s a really cool and refreshing way to explore the area!
A visit to the Tapir Valley is also recommended. Here you can search for wildlife day and night with an experienced naturalist guide. The largest and most impressive resident is the tapir, but there are also frogs, birds, snakes and many other animals.
Now that you have been in Costa Rica for a few days and have become acquainted with the beautiful versatile country, its inhabitants and road network, it is time for adventure!
In Liberia you exchange your rental car for a rougher and more adventurous version. The next 6 nights you will be driving a 4×4 with a rooftop tent. Before you head off, you will get instructions on how to use the rooftop tent and all camping materials. You only have to bring your own suit case, since all the necessities for a camping trip are included in the rental!
So, all you have to think about is where you want to go! You get to decide for yourself, although we are happy to give you some advice if you require. There’s also a very practical camping application on the smartphone that is included in the stay.
Liberia is the perfect starting point to explore the Guanacaste province. This region is known for the countless number of beautiful beaches, tropical dry forests and various national parks. You can camp in the wild, but there are also many campsites. Since it is usually dry and warm weather, it is a perfect area for camping!
