Do you want your tour around Costa Rica to be an unforgettable experience? Are you looking for a more eco-friendly itinerary for Costa Rica? Then book our “Green Circle Experience”. During this trip, you’ll stay at hotels and lodges with a strong personal and sustainable character. We are sure these locations are one-of-a-kind and the owners will make your journey unforgettable. How? Check out our travel description for more detailed information.
If you’d like to make your “Green Circle Experience” even more sustainable? This is possible! You can rent our plug-in hybrid rental car. All hotels participating in the Green Circle offer you to charge the car for free, not only a sustainable solution but, above all, very easy!
Your Green Circle journey is about to start! To get a feel of what this trip is all about, you meet the owners of all Green Circle hotels in the video on the right!
A taxi is waiting for you at the airport and will take you to the boutique hotel Grano de Oro in the center of San José, the starting point of this trip. The hotel is an oasis of tranquility in a bustling city. The colonial building was once inhabited by one of the most successful entrepreneurial families in Costa Rica. Their fantastic restaurant, perhaps the best in the city, is built in the same colonial style and takes you on a journey into the past.
You will explore the city under the guidance of an inspired guide. There are a number of historic buildings to admire, including the Teatro National from 1928 or the national post office from 1917. But you also go to the market to taste tropical fruits and local delights. In addition, there are various museums and nice parks to sit and enjoy the busy street life.
Once you’re back at the hotel, relax in the rooftop jacuzzi and prepare for an exquisite dinner in the hotel restaurant. Your time in San Jose is a great start of your ‘Green Circle Experience’!
Today you’re off exploring Costa Rica in the ‘Green Circle way’. After your stay in Grano de Oro, we will now gradually bring together the country’s history and its natural beauty. The perfect meeting place of these two, you’ll find in just over an hour’s drive from your first destination, in Sarapiqui.
Chances are that the monkeys will wake you up here, toucans will fly by and that a caiman will almost literally lie next to your breakfast table in the river that flows right past the restaurant. If you want to find out more about nature after breakfast, take the beautiful walk on the estate of your hotel.
The “Sura Chocolate Tour”, on which Green Circle participants receive a discount, is a fantastic story that explains the history of cocoa and lets you taste chocolate as it was made 500 years ago!
The next day you can go rafting, on the rivers Pacuare or Sarapiqui. If you want to take it a bit easier, then a visit to Frog´s Heaven is highly recommended. Jose, the owner, is an enthusiastic biologist and photographer and he’ll do everything to show as many colourful (often poisonous) frogs as he can.
The drive to your next destination takes you along beautiful, varied landscapes and pineapple plantations. Stop in a small village en route and take the time for a delicious cup of coffee and a chat with the Costa Rican people.
Once arrived in Boca Tapada, you park your car and step on the boat that takes you to the other side of the river, where the lodge is located. The owners of the lodge, the Artavia family, used to be Costa Rican cattle farmers but gave their lands back to nature in order to preserve it for the next generations. Now, the hotel is beautifully located and you’ll stay either in a nice bungalow overlooking the lake or high in a tree in a unique tree house! On the premises of the lodge, you can explore the jungle and waters yourself or with a guide. A guided night walk is highly recommended as well, because this gives you a different perspective on the jungle.
As a Green Circle guest you are invited for a guided hike through the rainforest and you will also plant a tree. Additional tour options include an early bird tour, the mentioned night walk or the boat trip on the San Carlos river up to the border with Nicaragua. Chances are you will spot crocodiles along the way!
Also, take your time around the lodge. Do not forget your binoculars and enjoy wildlife watching from the restaurant or from your balcony, there’s so much to see here!
You will spend the next two days on a beautiful estate and inspiring place literally at the end of the road. Your destination is known as the most sustainable hotel in Costa Rica. Judge for yourself if you agree! The ranch is completely self-sufficient and carbon-negative (and that is very positive!)
During the farm tour, which is included, you will undoubtedly get inspired and you often be amazed. The vision and philosophy that is implemented here is unique and make your stay truly unforgettable! All meals served here are produced in a sustainable, organic way. If you want to lend a hand, you can milk cows, collect eggs, pick herbs or see how soap is made.
A beautiful natural swimming pool has been created on the grounds of the ranch. You can also join a (free) yoga class or go hiking. There is plenty to do around the Arenal volcano and from where you are you can easily make various day trips (all optional).
Your ‘Green Circle Experience’ is slowly but surely coming to an end. This doesn’t happen however, before staying at the beach.
The drive to your last destination is quite long but definitely worth it. Do make sure you leave on time after breakfast. You’ll drive around Lake Arenal and if you’re planning a coffee break, Nuevo Arenal is a charming Costa Rican village offering a few nice bakeries and cafeteria’s to have your Costa Rican cup of coffee and enjoy nice views of the lake.
The final destination in Montezuma is not easy to reach, which definitely adds to the charm and exclusive feeling of this hotel! Once you arrive in the town centre, you park your car and the hotel owner will take you by 4×4 across the beach to the lodge. Welcome to paradise!
The lodge has been a dream come true for a Dutch / American couple. They did a fantastic job in creating their own slice of paradise and now their children are managing the hotel. The next few days are all about relaxing on and near the beach, Costa Rica’s Pura Vida could definitely have been invented here!
At the end of your journey you will return to San Jose: familiar territory. A nicer start to the Green Circle Experience was not thinkable and a last night here ensures a very comfortable end to a beautiful trip.
We hope that The Green Circle has inspired you. and has amazed and surprised you, made you laugh, but also made you think. Above all, we hope you’ve experienced the soul and beauty of Costa Rica, a country with friendly residents and the place where the Green Circle hotel owners decided to live and work for the rest of their lives. A life in paradise …
Edventure has put together something really special for us with this Green Circle tour. Beautiful nature with so many special animals and plants, delicious fruit and incredibly nice, helpful people!
We really cannot say what made the biggest impression on us with regards to this trip. Everyday was great when we think back. In addition, it was very special to see that the locations where we stayed all wanted have an impact and change the world for the better. And… they were also situated in the most beautiful places of Costa Rica.
We also liked it very much we were one of the first to rent the very first hybrid rental car in Costa Rica (initiated by Edventure).
Our hotel in Montezuma is truly heaven on earth for us. Now our Green Circle is about to close! And that is extremely unfortunate because it was a great adventure from day one.
We enjoyed our trips in San Jose, and we already experienced a lot of flora and fauna in Tortuguero. Guide Mario was great. At Hacienda la Isla we completely relaxed due to our stay in the beautiful chapel room and the delicious meals. Irma and Ivan showed us around and showed great commitment and kindness.
The latter is something that every Tico and Tica naturally seem to possess. Such as Julio in Maquenque, where we saw the toucan up close. At Rancho Margot we saw the power of what conscious choices can do with people. Your Green Circle idea is very special. Thank you for letting us experience this.
Yesterday we came back from our sustainable tour of Costa Rica. How much asphalt is there in the Netherlands and so little nature. We really became aware of this after our holiday and had to get used to it again. We had an unforgettable journey. We have seen and done so much and everything was well arranged by you, thank you so much!
The Green Circle trip is a wonderful concept. What beautiful locations and we immensely enjoyed to get to know the hotel owners and hear their stories.
We had very high expectations of Costa Rica and we can definitely say our trip has fully met them!
Our accommodation in Boca Tapada was simply paradise with incredible service! Absolutely the nicest location we have stayed in so I can recommend this to anyone. We had the treehouse, which was great!
Edventure has given us a dream trip that we certainly will remember for the rest of our lives😊
The Green Circle is now even greener! Together with local partner Adobe Rent a Car, Edventure is the first Costa Rican travel company to offer hybrid rental cars. You explore Costa Rica driving a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The car can be charged free of charge at all Green Circle hotels. Nice to know: 100% of the electricity in Costa Rica is generated sustainably.Meer informatie
