You arrive in San José, capital of Costa Rica and the starting point of your family trip! The city has a bustling center where you find many shops, bars, m arkets full of exotic fruits and vegetables, but also a few beautiful, historic monuments such as the Teatro Nacional.

A guided walk is recommended to really get a feel for the city. A visit to the indoor market Mercado Central is also very nice and a great place to taste local specialties. In recent years, many neighbourhoods in the city centre received a facelift. For dinner in town we recommend you check out Barrio Escalante, a nice area full of restaurants and bars.

If you don’t like cities that much, escape from bustling San Jose and go on a day tour to a beautiful butterfly garden, learn more about how to make coffee or chocolate or visit an active volcano! You find both the Poas volcano and the Irazú near San Jose!

Today you leave the big city far behind and travel by bus and boat to Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast and one of the country’s  most beautiful national parks: Tortuguero.

The beaches in the park are also important nesting locations for leatherback turtles, so if you are on holiday during the nesting season of these impressive animals, then definitely book a night tour to spot them laying their eggs!

Furthermore, you will almost definitely get to see  monkeys, toucans, iguanas and all kinds of birds and butterflies. During a boat tour in the morning, you explore the jungle from the water and that is a super cool experience! Afterwards, it’s great to relax in one of the two beautiful swimming pools of hotel.

Your next destination is the finca of Don Rodolfo and his family. They will warmly welcome you and introduce you to the daily routines of a Costa Rican farm.

Don Rodolfo himself or one of his other family members will take you on an extensive farm tour and explain in more detail on what actually is being produced on the finca.

At the finca the family is also running an excellent restaurant. If you like, you can even catch your own tilapia from the pond. Besides, almost everything elso on your plate is grown on the farm and therefore really fresh!

In the vicinity of the finca there’s a lot to do and see. If you ask nicely, you can take a dive in the river nearby. Chances are you’ll spot some  toucans. Adventure seekers can go rafting or tubing on the Sarapiqui River. Furthermore, you can book a night tour at the private reserve of Tirimbina and discover how much the jungle is alive in the dark!

Last but not least, if you like frogs and photography (not necessarily in that order:),  visit of Jose and his incredible Frog’s Heaven.

At the foot of the Arenal volcano lies the small town of  La Fortuna and your next destination. There’s lots to see and do in and around La Fortuna.

Active travellers  can go (among others!)  zip lining, quad riding, mountain biking or even wake boarding on the beautiful Lake Arenal.
We personally recommend the full-day Volcano Valley hike: a rather intense, guided dayhike in the vicinity of the Arenal volcano. Afterwards you’ll enjoy a nice cocktail while relaxing in local hotsprings.

The famous and popular waterfall of La Fortuna (see video) is also impressive to see and great for a refreshing swim! With clear weather you can also make a horse ride to the mirador, a nice viewpoint with a beautiful view of the Arenal volcano.

If you feel more towards relaxing, spend (part of) the day at Eco Termales or the Baldi Hotsprings. In the evening La Fortuna offers plenty of restaurant options.

You leave the volcano behind and travel to the Pacific coast in the province of Guanacaste.

The pristine coastline and crystal clear waters of Playa Grande make this one of the most beautiful beaches in Guanacaste and the perfect place for surfing. On the beach you can relax under a palm tree, but you can also go out and explore the other beaches in the area, from well known beaches to lesser known. The national park offers the opportunity to explore the mangroves. At the end of the day, return to your glamping accommodation and you can cool off with a splash in the pool.

The next destination of your Costa Rica family trip is Junquillal Beach, a small and tranquil beach town.

Your stay here will certainly include the key words sun, sea, beach and good food. At the lodge you’re staying the food is fantastic. Besides, on the nearby Avellanas beach, you’ll find Lola’s, a cosy bar named after the owner’s pet, a pig!

From Junquillal you can easily explore other beaches in the area by car. Also, if you never tried surfing, this might be the right spot to book a lesson!  Last but not least, near your hotel is a turtle hatch, if you’re visiting in the nesting season, you might spot turtles laying their eggs at night on the beach.

The mountain village of Monteverde is wellknown for its cloud forest. The ultimate way to experience that is probably via a zipline or canopy tour!

A little less exhilarating, but certainly as beautiful is exploring the forest from suspension bridges that have been mounted high up in the trees.

If you are a bird lover, spotting the beautiful (and endangered) quetzal is a must. Professional guides can introduce you to their nesting locations.

The charming village of Monteverde also offers a range of nice restaurants and bars. The region is also famous for its coffee production, cacao and fresh cheese. Therefore, also on a culinary level, you will certainly enjoy your stay here.

The very last destination of your family trip is a cozy hotel in Alajuela, close to the international airport.

In the tropical garden you can spot hummingbirds, butterflies and other tropical insects for the last time. And you can also take a refreshing dive in the pool before you fly home again.

In case you fly out in the late afternoon or evening, there might be enough time to plan a chocolate tour or visit to the Poas volcano in the morning!

Krom family from the Netherlands

Via Edventure we book the family trip around Costa Rica and had a great holiday. The whole trip was an unforgettable experience for ourselves and our boys of 19, 14 and 11 years old. We drove around the country in our own rental car, which was comfortable and went well. Edventure was able to include everything we really wanted to see in our trip, so we really saw a lot of the country.

The different climates, nature and animals were overwhelming. Our two youngest children who normally do not want to move around when on holiday, but prefer to stay in the same place, now could not wait to move on again after two days to see more of this beautiful country.
From sightseeing and relaxing on the beach to action packed adventures in the jungle, everything was included in our trip. We truly loved this very beautiful country with lovely, friendly and helpful people.

We started our family adventure in Costa Rica in Tortuguero. Being this our first destination after arriving in San Jose, was very relaxed. We were extremely well taken care of by drivers, guides and the other hotel personnel.
Our rooms were excellent rooms, the nearby sea beautiful, the food tasty and the staff very friendly.

Our guide was not intrusive and very helpful.  We visited the village of Tortuguero and made two excursions by boat in the reserve the next day.

Besides, we were lucky that a large adult turtle was released during our visit. For us, our stay in Tortuguero was a pleasant start to the rest of our family holiday, everything was well organized and that helped us a lot to get in the right ‘holiday mode’.

Our stay in Monteverde was nice! Our cabin was wonderful and our hosts were super hospitable people. The following excursions we can recommend with kids: a visit to the large (and high!) suspension bridges in the rainforest and a hike in the  Bosque Eterno de los ninos in Bajo el Tigre.

Van Wambeke family

When enjoying our family trip of Costa Rica, our stay in Arenal was particularly nice.  In our hotel there were hardly any guests at the time, so we got the room with the best view of the volcano 🙂

The ‘volcano hike’ you booked for us was great! We all really enjoyed it. Because of the rain there also was a lot of mud, but still, the tour was great and at the end we very much enjoyed our cocktails in the hotsprings!

What can you see and experience during the Costa Rica family trip?
