Time for yoga, adventure and sun in October! Between the 12th and the 25th of October 2019 Edventure organizes an adventurous yoga trip to Costa Rica. During this group trip, you will explore the beauty of the country and but you will also have enough time to reflect and learn more about yourself. The varied program is a great mix of adventure, excitement, yoga and relaxation. This trip is accessible for both beginners and more advanced yogi.
The interactive map will give you more information about the destinations of the trip, by clicking on the small flags you will find the information. Below, you will find the complete day-by-day program with all details about the accommodations, activities and other detailed information. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we will help you out!
The trip starts at Schiphol Airport, where you will meet your travel companions and yoga instructor Mariel Slotman and travel to Costa Rica together.
At the airport of San Jose, Marlou Stoltenborg will be waiting for you upon arrival to welcome you. She will be your tour guide from Edventure and will make sure everything will be arranged during your trip. From the airport, it will take us about 40 minutes to get to our first hotel in the city center of San Jose. After a welcome-drink and a short briefing you will have time to rest and relax after your long flight.
After your first real Costa Rican breakfast, including lots of fresh fruits, it’s time for a walk to explore the capital, San Jose. We will stroll around and end at the city park, where we will have our first yoga session.
Back at the hotel, you will have some time to refresh and pack your bags. From here, we will leave the city behind and we will continue towards Turrialba. We will stop for lunch at the office of Edventure before we drive further into the beautiful Costa Rican nature. We will stay at a simple, but comfortable and cosy accommodation with a stunning view over the Turrialba volcano. If you are lucky, you can spot the sloths from the yoga platform, like the one on the picture. In the evening, it’s time to learn some basic Spanish, that might be nice to use during the rest of the trip when we meet locals.
Today will be an exciting day! We will go rafting on the Pacuare river. A real adventure and marked as a highlight of the trip by almost all previous travellers!
It’s a really nice and different experience to watch nature from the water. Going through the massive rocks in the valley, where birds, toucans and parrots will be looking at you while sitting in treetops. This is just absolutely great! You can take a swim the creek and enjoy your lunch along the banks of the river, which makes this excursion complete.
We will overnight in a tented camp along the river, right in the middle of the jungle. The accommodation is a back to basic, but it has a great vibe and a beautiful garden, where you can relax. You will sleep in one of the simple tents, without electricity, but all necessary facilities like clean toilets and showers are there.
The guides from the tented camp will definitely make sure we all have a great time, besides being excellent and certified raft guides, they are also entertainers and they can even cook a delicious meal for us. After a yoga session in the garden, we can enjoy our dinner (by candlelight, since there is no electricity) and find the way to your tent for a night in nature!
Rafting is suitable for almost everyone. In case you have any questions or would like to learn more, do not hesitate to contact us.
Wauw. Waking up by the songs of the birds in the middle of the jungle is an amazing start of the day. We will start the day with a yoga session before breakfast when the sun is not too warm yet. You will feel very awake and energized and ready for a new day!
After breakfast, we will explore the river again! Now you know the rhythm of the river and rafting does not have any secrets for you anymore. Because of this, you can enjoy the nature and the views even more and it will be a different experience from the day before. We will get back for lunch, after which we take our bags and continue to the Caribbean!
In the past, people from Jamaica used to live on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. They lived here because of the construction of the Atlantic Railway, which was built to transport coffee from San Jose to the harbour of Limon for export purposes. The Jamaican vibe is still present in this area. This is where you will get to know the real meaning of ‘Pura Vida’ during the coming days.
After all the excitement and activities, it is now time to relax a bit and enjoy the time at the beach. And what is better than having relaxing yoga sessions on the beach! You will have enough free time to discover the area, its stunning nature, the local Caribbean culture and the local food! Together we will go to Cahuita National Park for a hike and explore the beautiful underwater during a snorkelling trip.
After our last yoga session on the beach, it is time to go to the next destination again. We leave the sandy beaches behind and continue to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. It is a little bit of a distance, but there will be enough to see along the way. On the way, we stop for lunch and a local cacao tour.
Sarapiqui is famous for its cacao, banana and pineapple plantations and is, therefore, the perfect place to learn everything about the history of chocolate. During the interactive tour, you will learn more about the process of chocolate making. Of course, you will also taste the local chocolate.
These two nights, we will stay at the local farm of the Gomez family. They run a typical Costa Rican ecological farm and started a bed and breakfast to give people the opportunity to experience life at a local farm. Farmer Don Rodolfo will guide us at his farm and will share his passion and knowledge with us. You will see he is very passionate about his own farm and really wants you to experience the best. Taste, smell and try the fresh products from the farm yourself and you will understand why he is so happy to share. The only thing we have to do at the farm is enjoying, relaxing and having yoga sessions in this unique setting.
After the last morning yoga session at the farm, we say goodbye to the Gomez family and continue our way. After just a short drive we will have our first stop: it is time for a very exciting canopy tour through the treetops! Like a bird you will fly from tree to tree, you will get to know Costa Rica from a different perspective now!
After this adrenaline boost and unforgettable experience, we move on to Maquenque, a wildlife reservation in the north of Costa Rica. This area is most popular for its special inhabitant: the macaw. Besides, you will also find countless other bird species, monkeys, crocodiles, sloths, different frogs, wild cats and many others. This is definitely a great place for everyone who loves nature and wants to explore the hidden gems of the jungle.
The lodge where we stay these two days is owned by the Artavia family. They came to the area around the fifties when they started a dairy farm. However, in the ’90s they decided to change everything drastically and wanted to give their land back to nature, instead of continuing with the farm. They changed the farm into an amazing eco-lodge where nature is most important and key for further development.
The Artavias created a small paradise in Costa Rica and we will be the lucky ones to enjoy this stunning place and even practice yoga here! The special platform in the lagoon is probably one of the most spectacular places where you ever had a yoga session. Besides the yoga sessions, we will go for a hike through the rain forest and a boat tour towards the border of Nicaragua, during which you can be amazed by the beauty this place has to offer.
Of course, you will also have time to explore this place by yourself and to relax, read a book on your balcony, listen to the song of the birds while having a fresh juice… you will love it!
Unfortunately, we have to leave paradise in Maquenque and slowly we leave nature behind while we drive through the pineapple fields and the green mountains back to the more civilized world again.
On the way to our last stop, we will make a stop in Sarchi, a village famous for its artisanal culture and the beautiful arts. This is the ideal place to buy some souvenirs to bring home. The last hotel is located only 15 minutes from the airport, but you do not have that feeling at all. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful nature and you will have time to relax and get some more sun at the swimming pool in the garden. A very nice way to end this memorable trip!
On the 25th of October, we will go to the airport, where Marlou will say goodbye and it is time to leave Costa Rica and travel back to the Netherlands.
