Tenorio Volcano National Park

Visit Tenorio National Park and walk along the beautiful clear blue Rio Celeste river up to the waterfall. Upstream, this blue colour becomes even more intense and you can relax in naturally warm water pools. Want to do more activities? You can explore the area on horseback or take a mountain bike to get to know the area. Another great tour is a so-called floating trip on the Corobici river where you will encounter monkeys, crocodiles and iguanas en route. For the adventurers; book a wild water rafting tour on the Tenorio River (up to category 5), an awesome experience!

Rio Celeste and Tenorio Volcano

Rio Celeste and Tenorio Volcano

Bijagua is a typical Costa Rican village near the river Rio Celeste and the Tenorio Volcano National Park. Rio Celeste owes its name to the intense blue colour of the water caused by the minerals sulphate and calcium carbonate. However, the locals believe that the river turned blue after God had painted the sky and washed out his brushes in the river.

The Tenorio volcano is a dormant volcano that erupted for the last time in 1902. Now, the area around the valley is beautiful and from the higher parts -and if the sky is clear- you can see Lake Nicaragua across the border. In Bijagua you will spend the night in a stylish bungalow with a beautiful view of the volcano.

At the hotel we booked a guide (Marlon Calderon Brenes – friend of owner Donald) to try and spot a Tapir. He took us to a farmer where, on his domain, tapirs are regularly spotted. After a rainy walk through the bushes we were lucky to actually see one!

We have also been to the Rio Celeste, what a nice place! The waterfall is absolutely stunning and you should absolutely walk up there. The hike is quite tiring, so take it easy. Also take into account that when it rains, the river water turns brown. If it’s sunny you’ll enjoy the intense blue colour of the river Rio Celeste!

This was the nicest accommodation of our trip, we stayed in Casitas Tenorio. Very nice host and hostess. Fine food. Possibility of excursions in the area at an additional cost. We made a very nice trip on horseback.

Most beautiful location of the trip. Very friendly reception, very neat and very nice houses. The farm tour is fun and the guide superfriendly.  It is striking that the entire farm is so clean. Breakfast was good.

Bijagua is in our eyes a real Costarican village. Fun! Casitas Tenorio was again a paradise because of the truly beautiful villas! The host and hostess are beautiful people who tipped us to escape the rain and drive towards the Pacific. They also run a small farm where you can book a guided tour and have the staff give a towel folding workshop, so that they can earn a little extra.

Tenorio Lodge we loved most during our trip! The view of the volcano, the delicious food, the jacuzzi, the beautiful surroundings, the fantastic lodge and the French host and wife were unforgettable. We hiked to the Rio Celeste waterfall. A tough climb, but definitely recommended.

Very good hotel, great food! The Rio Celeste was busier than expected, but our visit really worth the effort. Also, outside the park, taking a dive in the river is a must!

Insider tip from Linda:

At 1.5 kilometres from the village of Bijagua, you’ll find Frog`s Paradise. This is a small-scale and beautiful project of a local family who previously worked as farmers but decided some 20 years ago to let nature go its course again and jungle took control. Now they own a great private natural reserve and love to show visitors around. Especially the evening tour hosted by uncle Miguel is highly recommended!
