Hiking in the jungle of Costa Rica

Boca Tapada is a small village near the Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge. The recently established protected area stretches from the river Sarapiqui in the south to the border with Nicaragua in the north and is a true natural paradise. Exploring the Costa Rican jungle is a great experience!

The beautiful hotel where you will stay for the next 2 nights, can only be reached by ferry.  That makes the hotel a peaceful oasis in the midst of overwhelming nature. The Artavia family, a close-knit Costa Rican family own the lodge. Their six children, now all adults, grew up in Boca Tapada and are now dedicating their lives to sustainable tourism and improving the natural environment around Maquenque Ecolodge.

Wildlife spotting

The area around Maquenque Ecolodge is a true paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers. The most famous residents here are the Great Green Macaws. Also, you’ll have the chance to spot many other species of birds, turtles, caimans and crocodiles while on the optional guided jungle hike.

Would you like to explore the jungle in a different way? You can also join a guided night tour, during which you will learn more about the jungle after sunset.

Boat tour in the jungle

Boat tour in the jungle

If you want to see more of the area, book the early bird tour, the relaxing boat trip to the Rio San Juan and Rio San Carlos or the exciting evening tour to explore the jungle in the dark!

Additionally, you can borrow one of the lodge’s kayaks to explore the waters around the lodge. Take a refreshing dive in the pool or just relax and read a book on the balcony of your bungalow. Whatever you choose to do, do keep your camera and binoculars ready for some bird watching!

To us, the lodge was simply paradise with an incredible service! Definitely the nicest location we stayed during our holiday and I can recommend it to anyone. We slept in a real treehouse, which was great, but we chose to stay only one night here. The 2nd day we found a snake on our path to the treehouse and because of an earlier guided tour, I knew this was a poisonous snake. The people of the lodge removed the snake and, on our request, let us sleep in a bungalow near the lake. Service was great and we can only say that if you travel to Costa Rica, you should definitely stay here!

In Maquenque we went horseback riding. A great tour, but unfortunately our guide only spoke Spanish. He was a very sweet and pleasant man though who did his very best. The guided tour in the jungle, included in our stay, was really nice. A great guide who showed us as much as possible.

Very nice location, very neat. The guided tour is also fun and beautiful. We had a nice dinner there. It is not really possible to eat anywhere else than in the hotel, but that is not a problem at all, because the food is very tasty.

Incredibly beautiful location, we had a Jurassic Park feel. Great food and lots of new animals. Many opportunities for activities such as walks, canoeing, etc. And a beautiful pool in the garden.
Your water is heated with solar heaters, unfortunately that didn’t work always that well.

Magnificent. You arrive by boat and end up in a paradise full of birds. Nice reception with coconut cocktail. Good restaurant and varied buffet, but a bit more expensive.

Beautiful bungalows. Good guide, heard and seen a lot. Nice walk!
Afterwards we heard we could have planted a tree, that was not included in our stay, too bad!

A paradise in the middle of the jungle! We had a beautiful bungalow near the lake. In the restaurant you can enjoy delicious food and enjoy the tropical birds flying off and on.
With our guide Cathalina we made a great tour. We visited a farm where we could see and taste everything. The next day we sailed all the way to the border with Nicaragua and visited a local village. Along the way we spotted beautiful animals.
With Cathalina we also made the best guided jungle hike in Costa Rica. I spotted many animals and received a lot of information. The monkeys did not appreciate our visit to their territory and started to throw fruit and branches. It was a great experience. At the end of the tour we planted a tree and thus contributed to the preservation of the rainforest.

Absolutely great! Staff very nice and friendly. Food is a bit pricy. Good guide. We received a lot of information, learned a lot from our guide and spotted many animals. Planting the trees was very nice. Would like to go again to see if “our tree” has grown.

A beautiful place! You can hardly get closer to nature. We walked through the rainforest during the best guided jungle hike in Costa Rica! We saw many animals, especially birds. The boat excursion to the border with Nicaragua was also very nice (we spotted crocodiles!).

We received a warm welcome upon arrival in Maquenque. Very nice houses, lots of nature, a true paradise! The next day we walked around and explored the rainforest. In the afternoon, our guide informed us about the usefulness of the animals and vegetation. Afterwards we went for a kayak tour. We then enjoyed the great restaurant, relaxed at the pool and spotted a crocodile at breakfast the next day!
