A hidden paradise in the heart of Costa Rica
Between the South Pacific coast and San José lies a route that once should have become a main highway. Twenty years ago, the construction of this link was promised, but the highway never came. The result? A virtually authentic area skipped by most tourists – which is exactly what makes it so special.
This impressive route winds right through the green heart of Costa Rica, over mountain passes with breathtaking panoramas. Along the way you pass lush jungle, dense cloud forests and countless spectacular waterfalls. The road is challenging in parts – a 4×4 is not a luxury, but a must – which makes the ride all the more adventurous.
Central to this undiscovered area is La Cangreja National Park, a gem for nature lovers. It is Costa Rica’s youngest national park and was officially established in 2002. Here you will find unique flora and fauna such as the Scarlet Macaw, Sunbittern and Trogons. The hike to the top of the park is tough, but is rewarded with stunning views.
Not far away is the Refugio de Vida Silvestre Juco, a small-scale nature reserve that feels like a secret garden. Here, two impressive waterfalls plunge down into a natural pool – ideal for a refreshing dip. Among the rocks, you’ll discover countless frogs and other tiny inhabitants of this green paradise.
This region is not a standard stop on an itinerary through Costa Rica – and that’s exactly why you shouldn’t miss it.
Stay in a colonial mansion amidst lush jungle and at the top of a hill. From here you can enjoy breathtaking views of the rainforest. The hacienda is surrounded by a working vanilla plantation. On the property you will find private waterfalls, crystal clear streams with natural swimming pools.
The area is known for monkeys, toucans, and red macaws. After an active day, relax in the pool.
