The small, charming town of Ojochal is located a stone’s throw from the impressive Marine Park Marino Ballena. You can explore the park on foot or you can book a tour and go whale watching!
Marine Park Marino Ballena is one of the best places for whale watching in Costa Rica. The most common whale to find in Costa Rica is the humpback whale, they pass by the Costa Rican coast for more than 6 months a year, so enough chances to see them yourself!
August and September are the best months to see the humpback whales. This time of the year, they raise the young ones and they will come to the surface to breed, an amazing experience to see from close by! Not only in August and September are good months for whale watching in Costa Rica, but also during the periods from December to March and July to December, it is quite likely that you can see whales.
The quiet beaches of Playa Tortuga and Las Ventanas are great places to relax. In the evening there’s a couple of great restaurants in the centre of Ojochal you should try.
You will stay in an African style safari tent during your stay in Ojochal. In the morning you will be woken up by howler monkeys and when you get out of bed, you can directly dive in the river next to your tent! Or you can take a hot shower in the comfortable bathroom in your tent of course. From the lodge, you can visit nearby national parks Corcovado or Marino Ballena. Another great way to spend the day is to relax a day on the beautiful beach. You can also book hikes and horseback riding tours with a local guide. We also recommend to visit the village of Sierpe and book a mangrove tour, a great way to see and learn more about this special ecosystem. Enough to see and to do while staying Rio Tico Safari Lodge.
Do remember that your are staying in the middle of the jungle. The nearest cash machine is a 40 minute drive from your accommodation. Therefore, make sure you bring cash to pay for additional tours and meals. Restaurants do accept credit cards also.
