Go surfing on the Caribbean coast

Catching the waves of the Caribbean Sea is a great thing to do in the small beach town of Playa Cocles, Costa Rica. This beach is popular with local surfers and backpackers and its colourful wooden houses exude a relaxed Afro-Caribbean atmosphere. You stay in a nice wooden bungalow near the sea, but there’s also a swimming pool at your hotel: absolutely a great place to stay.

Beautiful beaches and Cahuita National Park

You can easily explore the area by bike (to be rented from your hotel) or by car. For example, visit the Cahuita National Park. You will find here white beaches, beautiful bays and you can swim, surf, snorkel and dive.

With a little luck, you will spot some dolphins as well! You can also hire a professional guide accompanying you on a hike in the jungle to spot monkeys, birds, raccoons, iguanas and sloths. The nearby town of Puerto Viejo is a relaxed place to visit in the afternoon/evening. There are a few nice boutiques and great restaurants and bars, a nice place to enjoy the Caribbean reggae atmosphere a little more even.

Caribbean vibe

The Caribbean coast was traditionally populated by Jamaicans, who arrived in Costa Rica as workers to build the Atlantic Railway. The infamous Jungle train drove from San José to the port of Limon to transport coffee beans.

Now the Caribbean coast exudes a relaxed atmosphere and the expressions ‘tranquilo‘ and ‘Pura Vida‘ are widely used. Inhabitants often speak better English than Spanish and you find everything you need along the road between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Enjoy the way of life here and take the time to chat with the locals, to relax on the beautiful beaches and to taste the delicious cuisine.

We really liked our hotel here, beautiful garden with nice houses. Good and complete interior. Delicious and extensive breakfast. Nice pool for the kids. We stayed here for 3 nights, but would have liked to stay a little longer. Restaurant has good food, but it is even nicer to eat in the village itself. Restaurant tip: Madre Tierra in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The bartender is great, very friendly service, good food and nice place.

Carribean vibes:

Tip from Linda:

The Caribbean coast is really beautiful and great to expore. Pack a towel, sunglasses and some spare change in the basket of your beach cruiser and you’re ready for the day! In Puerto Viejo you find nice boutiques, bars and restaurants. If you are looking for a more quiet atmosphere, cycle down to Manzanillo, where you can also make great walks on the beach. If you get thirsty along the way, buy a ‘pipa fria’ or coconut, its juice is the best refreshment!
