San Carlos

The town of San Carlos is the regional capital and gateway to the rest of Nicaragua when you enter the country from Costa Rica. From San Carlos, you can also explore the San Juan river all the way down to the Caribbean Sea. In the town center, there are a few nice restaurants and on the new boulevard. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing drink while listening to local salsa music!

You will stay in a beautiful eco-lodge managed by a Nicaraguan family at the edge of the river bank. Your bungalow on stilts has its own bathroom, beds with mosquito nets and a hammock on the balcony from which you have a beautiful view over the river.

The staff at the lodge was extremely hospitable and served us lunch when we arrived. We really enjoyed our stay there! One of the highlights of our stay was the jungle trip we made with Orlando (we even saw a crocodile and a sloth), this really made a great impression on us.

Sabalos Lodge is located right next to the river San Juan and here we were pampered and stayed in beautiful open cabinas with monkeys, birds and butterflies as our neighbours!

Tip from Renee:

This trip is a real adventure, exploring the unspoiled territory. Tourism is still in its infancy here. A visit to El Castillo is highly recommended. Besides the fort and the chocolate tour, it is nice to just walk through the photogenic village. Do ask for the time schedule of the last boat back to your lodge.
