Unique boutique hotel in Costa Rica

Dantica Lodge & Gallery is located at the edge of the valley in San Gerardo de Dota, about 2500m above sea level. All rooms of this boutique hotel offer a spectacular view over de the valley. You can easily spot hummingbirds from your room.

The valley is spectacular and great for hiking. Because of its location, it can be cold at night, therefore your room is equipped with warm duvets and a fireplace. One of the owners of the hotel has Colombian roots, which is reflected in the beautiful art gallery next to the hotel. These indigenous handicrafts are also used as decoration in your room.

San Gerardo de Dota

San Gerardo de Dota

San Gerardo de Dota is a charming village in a beautiful region of Costa Rica and only 85 km from San José. On your way from the capital, you travel the Cerro de la Muerte. The mountain range that separates the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Just before reaching the highest mountain pass (3300m), you descend to the beautiful green valley. The village was established in the 1950s when a number of families settled here. Now tourism is important, but trout production has always been a source of income as well. Make sure you taste some during your stay here!

Quetzal

Quetzal

The Costa Rican families that settled in this region in the 1950s have always championed nature conservation and sustainable tourism. The cloud forests are a unique ecosystem and unique on its own. San Gerardo de Dota is one of the few places in Central America, where you can still spot the mythic quetzal. This beautiful bird was regarded as a holy bird by the Maya in Mexico. It now is the national symbol of Guatemala and without a doubt one of the most special, wild animals you can encounter in Costa Rica.

Bird watching hike

Bird watching hike

The lodge offers an extensive breakfast and you can also have lunch there. In the evening it’s great to have dinner in a local, small restaurant.

When it comes to activities and tours, it’s definitely recommended to get up early for a guided hike to find the quetzal! Apart from the quetzal, it is likely that you will see woodpeckers, hummingbirds and the small green toucan flying by. The area is also great for horseback riding and hikes through the cloud forest. This is one of the unique boutique hotels in Costa Rica and is definitely worth a stay during your holidays.

Oldewarris family

Beautiful lodge in an area that was very different from everything we experienced in Costa Rica up until then. We had a great guide, helping us to find the quetzal. We really liked the food here as well and had a very nice dinner at Miriam’s place, great tip from Edventure!

We enjoyed the beach, the Costa Rican people, our dolphin tour, the mangrove forests and of course the beautiful Dantica Lodge in the mountains near San Gerardo de Dota. Awesome! We will definitely be back.

Dorien and Loek

Dantica Lodge was great and its restaurant was also fine. One little remark; perhaps useful to mention to your clients that you have to walk quite a bit, mostly stairs, to restaurant and reception This is normally not a big problem for any Costa Rica visitor, but we were unfortunately less mobile during this holiday.

Tip of Renee:

If you spend the night in San Gerardo, then make sure to enjoy at least once the homecooked meals of Doña Miriam. She runs a great little restaurant from her living room, where she serves you the most delicious freshly caught salmon trout.
