San Gerardo de Dota is a charming village in a beautiful region of Costa Rica and only 85 km from San José. On your way from the capital, you travel the Cerro de la Muerte. The mountain range that separates the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.
Just before reaching the highest mountain pass (3300m), you descend to the beautiful green valley. The village was established in the 1950s when a number of families settled here. When it comes to activities and tours, it’s definitely recommended to get up early for a guided hike to find the quetzal! Apart from the quetzal, it is likely that you will see woodpeckers, hummingbirds and the small green toucan flying by. The area is also great for horseback riding and hikes through the cloud forest. If you spend the night in San Gerardo, then make sure to enjoy at least once the homecooked meals of Doña Miriam. She runs a great little restaurant from her living room, where she serves you the most delicious freshly caught salmon trout.
