Surfing in Costa Rica

Looking for a place to go surfing in Costa Rica? Make sure you stop in Dominical, a laidback surfer’s paradise at the Pacific coast. Catch the waves straight away if you are an experienced surfer, or take a lesson first: Dominical is the perfect place.

If you’re not a surf fan, don’t worry, the beautiful beaches are great to just relax and when you seek more action, you can book a canopy tour in the jungle or hike to the Nauyaca waterfalls! There are many activities to do around the area, so there is something for everyone.

Ecolodge in Dominical

Your accommodation near Dominical is a very special place. The owner started out as a cattle breeder in 1972, but gradually became fascinated by the natural surroundings of his farm and decided to give the land back to nature. Now, the land is about 95% pure jungle again. Because of the cocoa trees, the area attracts many animals such as different species of monkeys, sloths, raccoons, toucans and other birds!

The lodge is located on the beach and has a nice swimming pool. It is a fantastic place for jungle treks with enthusiastic local -English speaking- guides, canopytours, hikes to the Nauyaca Waterfalls and much more!

Hacienda Baru is now well-known (in Costa Rica and beyond!) as a leading example of ecological entrepreneurship.

Hacienda Baru is a hotel with great natural surroundings and we explored the jungle by foot. The hotel itself is not super special, but its surroundings are. The small, nearby surfer’s town of Dominical is really great! There are high waves, so you can surf well and you can book various trips by boat, for instance to go snorkeling or whale watching. The area is not  super touristy, which we liked.

In Costa Rica, the Pacific coast is clearly different from the Caribbean coast. At the Pacific, the ocean is quieter and the beaches are wider. We stayed at Hotel Cuna del Angel, a very good hotel with a superb kitchen and a nice pool, which we liked at the end of our holiday. Also, we could walk from our room right to the pool. From here, we went to Uvita beach to see the whale’s tail (the Marino Ballena National Park), which was definitely worth it.

Hacienda Baru was very nice. The cottage was larger than we expected, with 2 spacious bedrooms and even a kitchen. Very nice people. We would do the twilight hike but it rained a lot, so we could change our reservation to the next evening without problems. The hike was great, so nice to explore the jungle after dark! We also booked a whale watching trip in Uvita, that was great! Spotting the whales greatly impressed us.

What a nice place! Beautiful cabinas, three beautiful and interesting walks around the terrain of the lodge, a reasonably good restaurant (friendly knowledgeable with humour), nice pool and also close to the beach and the ocean. At the top of the tree near the reception was a three-toed sloth with her little one! What else do you want? We were satisfied with everything.

Hacienda Baru in Dominical was a nice place to stay; Certainly their orchid garden has a lot to offer.

The night in the jungle was fun! We were two and a great guide so it had become a kind of private tour.  The tent and food were also fine. The only sad thing was the rain, because of this there wasn’t a lot we could do during the day. Our guide however made us aware what was happening in the jungle, also when it was raining and we appreciated his efforts a lot!

In Dominical we stayed in a surf hotel. Highly recommended for families with teenagers. It was low season, so quiet in the village, but the kids had surf lessons and explored the Dominical night life. Everything is within walking distance and the managers – Italians – are hospitable. And what a great breakfast! There are also plenty of nice sodas and restaurants within walking distance where you can eat. We would have liked to stay here a little longer.

In the evening you’ll join your guide on an evening walk to discover what is happening in the jungle after dark. In the morning you wake up with the sounds of the jungle. After a delicious breakfast you’ll take a walk along beautiful old trees in the rainforest and return to the starting point.
